"Upon contemplation, every plant will reveal its proprieties
and there is a plant for every illness".

                                                                                     (Anon)

Today, western holistic medicine is making a comeback from a period of allopathic supremacy, whereas, Traditional Indian Ayurvedic Medicine never abandoned the wisdom of the ancients. Herbalism remained an intrinsic part of our Medicinal system and culture. It has been a way of life.

Historically, plants have played an important role in medicine. For early peoples, it came easily to hand, and was intricately connected to their diet and healing. Through observation and experimentation, they learned about plants that promoted health and well-being. Our ancestors noticed that aches and pains could be treated with tea made from the bark of a willow tree. Eventually, scientists found that willow bark contains salicylic acid, the active ingredient in aspirin. Today, scientists and chemists throughout the world search the plant kingdom for new medicines. Of the available plant species on earth, very small numbers have been thoroughly screened and tested for potential medicinal use. Native plant habitats are being destroyed world over and, many medicinally valuable plants will be extinct before scientists can investigate them.

It has been Nandan Biomatrix’ endeavor to bridge the gap between nature and healthy living for mankind. Nandan’s role is to forge partnerships with farmers, industry, government and the academia to facilitate cultivation, sustainable use and conservation of medicinal plants native to India. Over time, the practice of herbal medicine has grown more complex. Science has enabled us to process natural substances into pills, tinctures, extracts and powders.

Keeping in mind the needs of the global market economy Nandan Biomatrix will soon be launching 8 medicinal and lifestyle health products into the retail markets nationally. These products have been formulated on the scientific basis of Ayurveda and the extensive research work being done by our experienced scientists at Nandan’s R&D Centre, ICRISAT, Hyderabad. Prevalent testing procedures for efficacy, toxicity, clinical and validation of the products are conducted by scientists under the prescribed testing parameters. Nandan Biomatrix Limited has taken an initiative to move forward in advocating global usefulness of natural products in the contemporary scenario of health care. Many foreign countries have begun looking to India for trade and supply of Natural Plant extracts.

Biodiesel

Biodiesel refers to alkyl esters made from the transesterification of both vegetable oils and/or animal fats. Biodiesel is biodegradable and non-toxic, and has significantly fewer emissions than petroleum-based diesel. Though Biodiesel is considered more expensive than petro-diesel the price differentiation is expected to soon diminish due to the methodical commercialization and economies of scale, rising petrol costs & government tax subsidies.

The use of biodiesel in a conventional diesel engine results in substantial reduction of unburned hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and particulate matter. Emissions of nitrogen oxides are either slightly reduced or slightly increased depending on the duty cycle and testing methods. The use of biodiesel decreases the solid carbon fraction of particulate matter (since the oxygen in biodiesel enables more complete combustion to CO2), eliminates the sulfate fraction (as there is no sulfur in the fuel), while the soluble, or hydrocarbon, fraction stays the same or is increased. Therefore, biodiesel works well with new technologies such as catalysts (which reduces the soluble fraction of diesel particulate but not the solid carbon fraction), particulate traps, and exhaust gas recirculation (potentially longer engine life due to less carbon). Like petroleum diesel, biodiesel operates in diesel engines. No engine modifications are required, and biodiesel maintains the payload capacity and range of diesel.

Human health and well being is dependant on the state of the environment and sustainable use of natural resources. Environmental degradation and depletion of natural resources are a major concern for the world community. Environmental issues are of decisive importance for development and economic growth. Sustainable development has long been an integral part of Nandan Biomatrix corporate philosophy.

Garcinia indica

Kokam, Kokum, Goa butter

Garcinia Indica is a Fruit Tree of culinary, Pharmaceutical, Nutraceuticals and Industrial uses. The tree is also ornamental, with a dense canopy of green and red-tinged leaves. It is indigenous to the western ghats region of India and is found in forest lands, riversides, and wasteland. Garcinia Indica can be cultivated on a small scale and does not require irrigation, spraying or fertilizers. Though these plants prefer evergreen forests it also thrives in relatively low-rainfall areas. Garcinia indica is known by various names across India -- including Bindin, Biran, Bhirand, Bhinda, Kokum, Katambi, Panarpuli, Ratamba or Amsol.

Domestic use

Garcinia indica is mainly used as a garnish to give an acid / tangy flavour to curries. It is also used to make cooling syrups & drinks during hot months of summer. It is mainly used in the form of 'kokam', prepared by drying the outer rind, soaking it repeatedly in the juice of the pulp and sun-drying.

Medicinal and Other use
The Garcinia Indica fruit is Antihelmintic and Cardiotonic and is considered useful in the treatment of piles, dysentery, tumors, pains and some cardiac ailments. The root is astringent in taste. Garcinia Indica has many medicinal uses. The edible fat / oil from the fruit, known as 'Kokum Butter' or ‘Cocoa Butter” is considered to have nutritive, demulcent, astringent and emollient properties and is suitable for nutracutical and pharmaceutical industries. Called "kokum" or "binna" in parts of western India, the Garcinia indica seed contains 23-26% Oil, which remains solid at room temperature and is used in the preparations of Chocolates, Medicines and Cosmetics. Its by-product is used as a supplementary cattle feed in India.

Recent research by Scientists in India suggest that the extraction of “Hydroxy Citric Acid” -- HCA has fat-reducing, blood purification and cholesterol reducing properties for the human body. Scientists researching on the crop see it as having a bright future.

Recipe - Herb

-A Scientific Research Paper presented at the Goa seminar in March 2005 suggests that :
In the case of digestive problems, about half to one glass of curry is prepared from the fruits, with a little salt and sugar, to be taken after meals. For paralysis, the clean-chopped stem bark is finely powdered and is added to boiling water. After 2-3 minutes, a lightly cooled decoction is used for washing the affected parts, two to three times a day.
